There are plenty of reasons to gather and celebrate during the holidays. Having said that, it’s important to keep your indoor air quality in mind to ensure your home’s air is ready to take on the holiday cheer!
The holidays can become quite hectic due to all of the foot traffic and holiday activities in your home. Unfortunately, this may cause your home’s indoor air quality to decrease significantly. In order to protect your indoor air, we put together 3 winter holiday IAQ tips to ensure you have breathable air, an efficient HVAC system, and safe holiday festivities.
1. Dust & Vacuum Regularly
Your HVAC system can collect dust and debris rather quickly. Not only does dusting and vacuuming help to reduce indoor air pollutants in your home, but also increases the efficiency of your HVAC system. In turn, this will help to improve your indoor air quality, allowing your holiday guests to breathe healthy air.
2. Pick The Right Tree
When choosing a live Christmas tree, opt for a fresh, green one with strong needles that won't fall off when handled. Similar to pumpkins during fall, living decorations are a mold risk, so the fresher, the better! Also, do not place your tree near vents and other heat sources. This is a fire hazard, and no one wants to call the fire department during the holidays!
3. Replace Your Air Filters
Filters can only work if they're clean and changed regularly. In other words, clogged and dirty filters mean poor indoor air quality! Before you invite guests over for the holidays, be sure to check your filters and install new ones if necessary. Pro-tip: take a filter out and put it in front of a source of light. If you can't see light through it, it's time for a replacement.
